march for babies / 24 before 25

on saturday, i participated in the march for babies walk at exposition park in los angeles!

as you may or may not know, item #21 on my 24 before 25 list is to "participate in some sort of marathon/walk for a good cause."

my coworker veronica (she was also a bridesmaid in my wedding) found this walk and asked if i wanted to walk with her, to which i said "of course!" obviously i would have participated regardless of the charity, but it was a happy coincidence that this walk benefits the March of Dimes charity..

in 2011, randy's cousin delivered her baby at 28 weeks. the doctors were unable to find an explanation for the early labor. the baby was under-developed and ended up not making it. the march of dimes helped randy's cousin and her baby by providing them access to medical care which they might not have received without this wonderful charity.

veronica ended up not being able to participate because of a family thing, but carmella and the baby walked with me, and we had so much fun! it was such a fun day, and to see all these people coming together to help babies was very heart-warming.

this was one of the best things i saw - these triplets were born at 26 weeks. they all weighed under 2 pounds each. thanks to the march of dimes charity, they were able to get medical help and are now happy and healthy.

this is definitely something i can't wait to participate in again next year. carmella and i want to put together a team and get our friends together to walk with us.

you don't need to wait for an event, click here to donate now!

disclaimer: i am not sponsored by march of dimes or any of its affiliates. i have not been asked to blog about their charity.

how i lost 9 pounds in 8 weeks

*source
i'm a girl, and i'm getting married. so obviously i'm trying to lose weight for my wedding.

after scouring pinterest for diet and workout tips to pin to my 'wedding fitness' board, i somehow came across something fantastic: the 8-week weight-loss challenge.

i've done diets before, so i'm no stranger to trying different methods of weight-loss in terms of the food aspect. but, i'm not very good when it comes to will power, and an extra helping of pasta or buying a fastbreak after work always won out over an apple a day. the thing that usually makes me quit diets is they always seem to focus on what you can't have and not on what you can have. but the 8-week challenge is completely different from anything i've ever tried before.

the gist is that it works on a points system, so it's definitely better to do this with a group of people (and for money!). you get points for certain tasks each week (like eating 2 servings of fruits or keeping a food journal), and then points based on how many pounds you have lost. the thing i love about the challenge is that each person can do this diet in their own way, on their own terms. the rules are very broad and can be adapted to any type of lifestyle. here are the things that earn you weekly points:

contact with teammate
64 oz water
stop eating before 9 pm
2 fruit servings*
3 vegetable servings*
no sweets/surgary treats (only 6 days a week)
keep a food journal
30 min/45 minutes exercise (only 5 days a week)
*1/2 cup or 1 whole fruit/vegetable is 1 serving

drinking 64 ounces of water every day has made such a difference for me. while i do visit the ladies room more often, i also feel generally better because my body is much more hydrated than it was before. also not eating as late (when randy closes at work, he would pick up food on the way home and we wouldn't eat until 10 or 10:30 pm some nights) has freed up the entire evening for me and not only do i get more things done, i make it to bed earlier. but it's so great because each person can do this challenge in their own way. you have to eat 3 servings of vegetables each day, but not any specific vegetable. you need to work out 5 days a week, but you get to pick the exercise you like, and you get 2 rest days. my favorite is the one treat day each week, which i sometimes stretch to two days, but i'm not too ashamed about that.

myself and 5 others decided to try out the challenge. randy even did it with me! at first, it was annoying because i had to prepare twice as much food, but it ended up being a really great experience for us to go through together. making meals in the actual kitchen has made me feel more "wife-ly" and we both feel better from well-rounded, portion-controlled meals. we have also started jogging together when our schedules permit, and trying something new has been so much fun. i know losing 9 pounds in 2 months isn't super impressive (that's a loss of 1.125 pounds per week), but these lifestyle changes will help me to both continue to lose weight and to maintain my weight-loss going forward. also, randy lost 16 pounds overall, so if you need something impressive, there ya go!

as per the challenge's directions, there are 2 winners at the end of 8 weeks (any money that was contributed to the challenge is split between the winners): the person with the most total points, and the person who lost the largest percentage of weight. our group decided not to play for money afterall, but everyone involved lost weight!

in case you are curious, here are the typical meals i ate during the challenge:

breakfast: egg bake or greek yogurt
10 am snack: fruit
lunch: turkey sandwich w/ cheese on thin bread OR vegetable soup
always a side of carrots, green beans, or some other veggie
4:30 pm snack: granola bar or small veggie side or small fruit side
dinner: varied based on what i needed for points (but some

although there were technically no limits involving carbs, i tried to eat them earlier in the day so i could burn them off. and if for some reason i needed to include carbs in my dinners, i always chose whole wheats.

my typical workouts were either my wedding workout DVD coupled with some exercises found on pinterest, or a 2 - 2.5 mile jog with randy, or a 45-minute walk with lilly. (a mix of weight training and cardio is really good because you will lose inches as well as gaining muscle tone).

start your own challenge! print out your 8-week challenge guide here.

i've also tried the slow-carb diet, from which i got pretty good results in terms of pounds lost. however, the diet itself is pretty torturous. i also don't remember feeling as good as i do now when i was on the slow-carb diet. i can tell a big difference in my body physically, my clothes are fitting better, and i haven't had a problem with low-energy or feeling deprived because of the food i'm eating. the stringency of the slow-carb diet is part of the reason i fell off of it, but if that's something that works for you, i would recommend it.

if you decide to try the 8-week challenge, i would love to know! remember, the best way to achieve your fitness goals is to keep your eye on the prize and build a good support system for yourself.

happy losing!

turkey sausage + bell peppers

holy moly, have i found the dinner jackpot!!!

i have to disclose: i had dinner at carmella's house one night, and she made something very similar, so i kind of stole this from her :)

similar to other things i like to cook, this dish is super duper easy!

chop all of your ingredients
(i used sweet italian turkey sausage, bell peppers, tomato, and zucchini *i forgot onion here, but definitely add it!)
i cut the sausage so that it would cook faster, but you can leave them whole if that suits you
pour a touch of olive oil into a pan; add ingredients and cook over a low/medium flame
cooking time will depend on how much food you are preparing. to speed cooking, cover the pan and stir frequently

i have to mention that i was so scared about adding tomatoes because i thought they were going to burn in the pan, and burned tomatoes doesn't sound like the most awesome thing in the world. luckily, they didn't burn :) they did fall apart a bit, but they flavored the sausage really nicely.

while your meal is cooking, you can prepare your side. in this instance, we thought rice pilaf would go nicely (which it did). this was boxed, so i just followed the cooking directions.

a few other ideas: you could make 'sandwiches' with the sausage mixture and pair with a nice salad; or you could finely chop the ingredients and put it on top of whole wheat pasta. the other night i paired it with some crinkle-cut sweet potatoe fries that i roasted in the oven, and it was a very fall-feeling dinner.

however you decide to serve it, i guarantee it will be a big hit! randy finished his plate in just about 4 seconds!

add some olive oil to the pan so that your food doesn't stick and burn

yes, this is a santa plate

alaina + randy's egg bake

i've found a great breakfast that packs nutrients, and is also easy for those hectic mornings when you're trying not to be 15 minutes late to work.. again!

let's call this one.. alaina + randy's egg bake :)

*i've also seen this type of thing done using a cupcake pan. here, i use a bread pan.

for the pan i use, i find 9 eggs works best
crack and pour eggs into a mixing bowl. scramble the eggs
add in vegetables of your choice (my faves are tomato, zucchini, and a bit of onion)
pour contents into your pan. i "stir" once it's in the pan to make sure the vegetables are evenly distributed
top with a light layer of cheese
bake @ 350 degrees; i've never timed it, but i like to tip the pan to one side, and if the contents are pretty sturdy and no raw egg leaks out, i know it's done

if i'm making this at night time, i let the dish cool for about 10 to 15 minutes. then, i cut 6 slices and put 3 slices into 2 tupperware containers. this will be randy's and my breakfast for 3 days. each morning we take a slice out and pop it in the microwave.

easiest chicken dinner in ze world!

randy and i have been participating in a weight-loss challenge with some of our friends, so i've been trying really hard to cook healthier meals at home (or cook at all, for that matter..)

one thing i've found that is super easy and tastes delicious is this chicken and veggie thing (there is no official name yet). i do have to admit, i stole the general idea from pinterest, but changed some things around a bit..

it's so super easy i feel silly writing directions, but basically you:

put raw chicken into a baking dish
add vegetables of your choice
pour just a touch of melted butter over all contents (i've forgotten this step and it's still delicious)
*this was my contribution* add a can of diced tomatoes over the top
cover with foil and bake @ 350 degrees for about 1 hour (or until all ingredients are cooked)
and you've got dinner!

i usually always add potatoes; you can also add other vegetables like zucchini (3rd image) or carrots, etc.

i didn't realize, but the can of diced tomatoes i had also has green chiles in it. this gave it more of a salsa-y taste.

how easy is this, seriously? and when you plate it, it looks like you spent more time on the meal than you actually did. the reason i didn't used to cook as much is because i didn't think i was creative with food; this dish makes me feel like i've got a little more going on in the kitchen than i thought!

happy cooking!

wedding wednesday

i'll be completely honest with y'all: i'm about 7 and a half months away from my wedding and nowhere near any of the fitness goals i set for myself.

i've posted about it before and it's pretty much common knowledge that every bride goes through an oh shit moment and wants to lose weight before the wedding.

if you troll all the best wedding blogs, you will always see health and fitness tips and tricks when it comes to wedding day shape. however, marry this had a quite different take on things:

5 reasons why you should get married when you're fat

keep in mind, they don't mean this in an offensive way, but they do bring up some very good points concerning why it can be dangerous to get crazy about losing weight for the wedding.

you should definitely take a read, but my beyond favorite point the article makes is that a bride never not looks absolutely amazingly gorgeous on her wedding day, regardless of what size or shape she is. now, this doesn't mean i'm not going to try and get my arms into shape (helloooo strapless), but it did make me feel better about how i've been slacking lately. happiness is what makes a person truly beautiful.

wedding wednesday

we are about 8 and a half months our from our wedding day!!!!!!W@(U*W(*($*#($*#($*#($*

i keep going back and forth between feeling like time is going by soooo slowly and thinking "oh my god.. it will be here before i know it!"

one of my biggest concerns is looking amazing on my wedding day. now, it's not like i want to lose 100 pounds, but i do want to look what i consider my best, while still looking like 'alaina.'

i've fallen off the bandwagon with my fitness routine lately, but i'm detemined to get back into it - it's all about forming habits, people!

one of the things i tried is this women's health wedding workout dvd, and i love it! it's been pretty perfect for me because while the workouts are significantly easier than any other workout video i've tried (mostly from the biggest loser series), they still make you sweat! the instruction can be a little hokey sometimes, but what can ya do?

*i also purchased a pussycat dolls dance workout dvd, but i haven't tried that yet, so i couldn't tell you about it if i wanted to!

while the dvds are nice because all you have to do is mimic the movements, i do like workout out on my own with my own music and without some strange instructor lady. pinterest is a great place to troll for workouts.

http://pinterest.com/pin/281475045431249497/

another cool thing i found on pinterest says to do the following right before you get in the shower:
  • 50 jumping jacks
  • 5 push ups
  • 20 crunches
  • 20 mountain climbers
  • 30 second plank
i have taken 3 or 4 showers since i found this pin, and every single time i have forgotten to try this :( boo!

as i mentioned, while i do want to slim down a bit and tone up (hello, not so ready for a strapless at the moment..) i don't intend to drive myself crazy with wedding workouts and diets. one of my favorite bloggers, kat from rock n roll bride, recently published a post about how the 'wedding diet' has taken over the industry. if you're a bride, were a bride, or will one day be a bride, you should definitely give it a read!

have a wonderful wednesday, every one!

feed me!

randy, lilly, and i took a looooong walk on tuesday evening, and it felt so nice to get out of the house!

usually our schedules aren't nice enough to let us both have time like that together. but we are going to make more of an effort to take walks; it's a nice excuse to catch up and obviously get some exercise.

both randy and myself have some health and exercise goals that have been 'inspired' by our upcoming wedding. i'll try and remember to let you in on any progress we make. but let me tell you, sometimes i just want to be carried away on a riptide of cheese!

adventures in juicing

i bought a juicer!

this bad boy is the black & decker JE2200B fruit & vegetable juice extractor. i bought it here on amazon for $30.

and i can't get enough of it!

what i usually do is juice right before i go to bed, so between 10:30 and 11 pm, and keep it in a canteen in the fridge, then i'll drink it when i go to work the next morning, so around 8-8:15 am.

here's some of the best combinations i've tried so far:

1 orange, 1 apple, 3 baby bell peppers, 1 carrot

chop it all up so it can fit in the juicer!

this combination was really good. it wasn't as citrus-y as the other juices i've made, which was nice. oh and a quick tip, if you juice something that you don't really love the taste of (for me, it's celery), add part of a lemon to the juice and it'll help mask the flavor.

look at all the leftover pulp! this juicer is really easy to clean by the way. you just take everything apart (there are 5 parts that you'll need to clean) and wash it. it literally takes 5 minutes to clean completely.

1 stalk of celery, 1 grapefruit, 2 baby bell peppers

if you do take up juicing, make sure you whisk or stir the juice before you try and drink it. otherwise you'll get layers of pure juice and it might not taste the best.

of course i had to try traditional orange juice with my breakfast. it was very refreshing. not as sweet as packaged orange juice, but still very good. i even added some pulp back in, because i love pulpy oj.

the purpose of this isn't really to give a demonstration on juicing, because literally you stick the fruits or vegetables into it and it juices it. i wanted to share this with you all because i'm terrible at consuming fruits and veggies, so getting this juicer has been a great way for me to sneak them into my diet. i also don't know if this has any correlation, but my skin has cleared up considerably since i've started drinking fruit and veggie juice.

if you have a juicer, what are your favorite 'recipes'? i'd love to know!

lemon water

somehow i happened upon this post by lauren conrad about lemon water, and i think i'm going to start drinking it!

according to miss conrad:
  1. It’s a natural energizer! It hydrates and oxygenates the body so it feels revitalized and refreshed.
  2. It’s cleansing. According to NaturalNews.com, the citric acid in lemons helps maximize enzyme function, which stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification.
  3. It aids in digestion. Not only will this killer combination relive indigestion, it will also help flush you out.

weigh-in & wedding weekend madness

so here's the haps, ladies & gents..

i had a post almost all ready to go for yesterday, but in the midst of all the craziness, i forgot to finish & post it! shame on me, someone slap my hand!

anyway, my weigh-in from yesterday was horrendous. i'm convinced that i sabotaged myself on friday night. randy and i were at a rehearsal dinner for a friend's wedding, and the choices of diet-friendly food were limited, so we kind of had to work with what we had (i think i forgot to mention, randy's on the diet kick too!). anyway, see below for my disappointing results:

time for another weigh-in!
7/24-7/30: +2.5 lbs
7/11-7/30: -3.5 lbs

i'm still down 3.5 pounds overall, but i was hoping to be closer to 10. in all honesty, i feel closer to 10 than i do 3.5, so even though i gained, i'm still feeling good. there's always next week, right?

to read about my diet, click here!

there are also 4 other people at work that are on the slow-carb diet, and we fantasize about our cheat day all day long! i wonder who added cake and tequila...??

so yesterday, our friends matt & carmella got married. since randy was the best man, it was a full day of wedding-ness for us. i took pictures of the bride getting ready so i got there pretty early in the afternoon. here are some shots from the morning:

i'll post pictures of my dress in a couple of days

until next time..
