body image

like most women, i have struggled with my body my whole life. there has not really been a time that i can remember being happy with the body i had when i had it.

also like most women, my body has been a point of contention most of my life. i exist in a family of extremely physical people - my dad is a cyclist and before that used to run and hike like a madman. my stepmom kite boards and did yoga for years. both of my parents are extremely physically fit - skinny, tiny, slim, everything. and i, unfortunately, am not.

and i'm the first to admit it - my body ain't what she used to be, unfortunately. i was in dance class for 3 years in high school, loved it. but that was my only outlet for physical activity. yes, i do envy the body i had at 18 years old, and i wish i could go back in time to tell my 18-year-old-self to appreciate it. but even then, i hated my body because for some reason, i wasn't as skinny as the 'popular' girls.

here is what's happened in the last 4 years:

yes i was skinnier then than i am now, but a different kind of change has occurred in me. it isn't as much about what is on the outside - i feel great things happening for me on the inside.

believe me, i do not pitty myself or spend time being jealous of the old me. in fact, i don't think i would go back to being 18 if you paid me. yeah, being young and reckless (and skinnier, apparently) is fun, but my life is so much richer now than it was my senior year..
  • i have someone in my life who loves me as much, if not more, than he did 4 years ago
  • i am not as apologetic for the way i am - love me or leave me!
  • i have learned to accept my physical limitations - my hips will never allow me to be a size 0
  • after being virtually sedentary for at least a couple of years, i now go to the gym at least 4 times a week
  • even though i still have bad days, there are many ways in which i am beautiful, both on and beneath the surface

the best part about growing is learning - and i still have far more of both to do. i need to learn not to let my family's comments about their concern for my health & self-confidence bother me; i know they mean it from a good place, which i appreciate, but i need to reassure myself that they love me not matter what size or shape i am, because i know i do.

there was a really great 2-part series on gala darling's blog recently about body image in the blogosphere. click here for part 1 and part 2 - you really should give it a read. one reassuring thing is that everyone has body image baggage - even the people you think are 'perfect' or 'have it all.'

i don't think any woman should ever look at herself and hate what she sees in the mirror. it shouldn't be about if you can fit into a designer's sample sizes or having the same body type as heidi klum. i am a believer in if you don't like something about yourself - change it. but: do it because you want it. lose weight if you feel that's what you need to love yourself. if you don't need to hit the gym 7 days a week to love yourself, then don't.

yes, there are things i want to change about my body, and i love myself for working on them. other than that, here's what i have to say:
: )

sunshine

my life has been feeling very sunshine-y lately, and i'm loving it!

i agree with the photo above (love it!), but i also think that you can't bring sunshine into the lives of others if you can't bring it into your life first, which is what i've been concentrating on lately.

this sounds so dumb and i'm really second-guessing myself about putting this out for everyone to see, but i was getting ready for work yesterday morning and for some reason the line "don't be a drag, just be a queen" from that awful lady gaga song popped into my head. although that song is not one of my favorites, she's completely right - so i've decided to make that my mantra this week. i'm going to concentrate on the positive - and be fabulous doing it!

until next time..

what women want

i found this hilarious article about things women wish men knew. here are some highlights:

#5: I'm convinced I'm pregnant and obsess about it for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours before my period, even when I have no rational reason to think so.

#11: I expect you to call me.

#13: I'm scared of losing my independence.

#17: If I'm not having sex with you, I'm . . . a.) . . . having a fat day. b.) . . . not feeling "connected" to you. c.) . . . blackmailing you to get something I want.

#27: I'm very impressed when you ask for my advice.

this is randy's life:
#34: I need to hear how you feel about me. Often. Tell me now.

#36: I want to be the best thing that ever happened to you—and for you to recognize this.

#45: I love holding your bum in the palms of my hands.

#46: Even nice girls like hushed dirty talk in public.

#50: You should know all this and more without my telling you.

so funny! yet, so true..

until next time..

what i wore

happy friday to all!

it's time for another:

this morning i actually put a little effort into my styling:

my outfit is very simple: a white ruffled shirt, jeans, and black flats.
i paired this with a penny farthing necklace (which reminds me of my dad) and a floral puff clip-thing from forever 21. and *gasp* i actually styled my hair this morning! i did a side bun and stuck the floral clip on it. i even braided my bangs on the opposite side and integrated it into the rest of my hair with a twist. maybe my hair is the reason i was 15 minutes late for work..

my last accessory was my tiffany somerset ring. it is by far my favorite piece of jewelry. randy got it for me on my last birthday, and i feel naked if i go a day without wearing it.

overall, my outfit is very comfy - i can thank the over sized shirt for that! but, the accessories and hairstyle help make it look more put-together instead of just thrown-on.

10 day challenge

this week's challenge is hard for me, since i'm not a big reader..

but fortunately, i was just on an airplane so i went through a couple of books during my travels:

1. 'are you there, vodka? it's me, chelsea' by chelsea handler
2. 'matters of the heart' by danielle steel (borrowed from my grandma in a moment of desperation before my flight)

because i pathetically can't think of 2 more books i have actually read cover-cover in the past couple of years, here are two books i want to read:

3. 'bossypants' by tina fey - i've heard this book is phenomenal!
4. 'the hunger games' by suzanne collins - i've heard a lot of hype about this book as well. it might be the next one i purchase!

until next time..

love among the ruins

how romantic is this??

during the riot in vancouver, bc after game 7 of the stanley cup finals, scott jones calmed his girlfriend, alexandra thomas, by kissing her after she had gotten knocked down by police officials.

a moment of love among a terrible riot that left 150 people injured and almost 100 arrested.

date night

randy and i took some time out for us last thursday and actually went on a date!

we started by going to dinner @ elbow's, which is a 'gourmet' mac & cheese place. i got the spinach & artichoke mac, and randy got jalapeno mac, and we couldn't resist a red velvet cupcake & chocolate chip cookie for dessert!

yum!

then, we went to see bridesmaids. i have been wanting to see it since it came out, but haven't gotten the opportunity before now. one word: hilarious! if you haven't seen it, i definitely recommend that you do!
one of the nicest parts of the date was that we had coupons for everything we did! livingsocial is my favorite thing, i swear! here's what we did:

i paid $10 to get $20 to spend at elbow's
we 'spent' $19.40, so we only had to pay the tax of $1.89]
so dinner was $11.89
randy bought 2 movie tickets for $9 through livingsocial/fandango
our date only set us back $20.89 - which is a savings of about $24.40!!!

it was nice to spend some quality time with the hubs, especially since he left for a bachelor party in vegas the next day.

until next time..

oregon trip recap

gooood morning everyone!

i finally got around to uploading all the pictures and stuff from my oregon trip last weekend. i didn't take as many pictures as i should have, but i was concentrating on spending time with my family.

firstly, we took dave with us on the trip. we didn't have anywhere to leave him over the weekend, so my dad flew with him last wednesday. he did really great on the trip, and from what i can tell, had a great time!

on sunday was the big bash for my grandma. we also have other birthdays and anniversaries in june, but this was mostly about my ammy. she turned the big 7-5 this year, and is just as 'with it' as she's ever been!

tons of people showed up to celebrate her and it was nice having our extended family together. it was potluck style and everyone brought their favorite mexican food dish. there was even a pinata!

until next time..

new series: what i wore

the good news is, it's friday!

the other good news is that i'm going to start a new series: what i wore!

i don't really know how to describe my style;

i like comfy clothes - i need to be comfortable or else i ain't wearin' it!

i tend to buy a lot of plain clothes aka no patterns. i've been trying to get better about this.

to me, creating an outfit is about the layers you use. i will rarely just wear jeans and a tshirt. i need a sweater or some jewelry or some flashy shoes.

speaking of..

(i'm a bit of a cheater, because i wore this outfit last friday)

i usually dress pretty casually for work, and this outfit is no exception.
without jazzing it up, it would be very bo-ring.
so i added my all-time favorite sweater that i got on sale @ pacsun along with a necklace i just got from f21.
i also wore a lace-lined white tank underneath and let it show for some contrast & a touch of girly-ness.
the 'flare' of this outfit definitely comes from my black glitter faux-toms that i bought @ tilly's the other day. i couldn't resist!

the best part: the whole outfit couldn't have cost me more than $52!

keep your eye out for the next WIW & have a fabulous friday!

until next time..
